8 of the Best Clean Skin Body Oils. And Recipes to Make your Own

8 of the Best Clean Skin Body Oils. And Recipes to Make your Own

There is something truly indulgent and luxurious about body oils, it’s ultra moisturising and decadent, leaving your skin with a beautiful glow. It’s not something you’ll put on right before you rush out the door, even the lightest oils need time to gently soak in. That is the point of it all, to take a bit of a breather for yourself and to soak up the beautiful aromas a good body oil can deliver.

People have been using body oils since Biblical times. The ancient Egyptians were well known for formulating legendary oils. Rumour has it that pots with richly scented oils still held a faint odour when King Tutankamen’s tomb was opened 3000 years later. In Egypt, everyone used body oils, from royalty to labourers, but we’ve somehow replaced the art of regularly using aromatic and moisturising oils with lotions and other store-bought potions that were cooked up in a chemistry lab.

Unlike traditional body oils used by the ancient Egyptians, modern oils can still contain menacing ingredients such as mineral oil, artificial fragrances and silicones. A big culprit is oils labelled as bath oil, this is often cut with drying ingredients and solvents that prevent the side of the bath from going greasy in the process. It’s as if we’re creating more problems by trying to be too clever with our solutions, sometimes a bit of good old fashioned elbow grease is a better solution to keeping the bath clean than adding ominous ingredients to the bath oil.

Make your own body oil

Make your Own Body Oil DIY Recipes

Making your own means that you know exactly what’s in it. Body oils are generally made up of carriers oil and a mix of fragrant essential oils. Yes, it really is that simple, however, you should pay attention to the ratios. Start with a smaller amount, roughly 60ml of carrier oil or 30ml if you’d like to test the fragrance first, adding 15 drops of essential oils per 60 ml carrier oil will give you enough fragrance so that it’s not overwhelming. You can use less essential oil if this is too fragrant for you, this recipe is yours to make your own. That’s the whole point of doing this yourself right?

If you’re going to all the trouble to make your own oil, step it up and use organic oils for pure goodness, it will be better for you and the planet. You can experiment with the two combinations below depending on your personal preference around fragrances. I like using mint for summer as it has a slight cooling effect, the bigger the peppermint ratio the bigger the cooling effect.

Remeber to do a patch test first to ensure you don’t get a reaction from any of the oils you’re using.
